Phillips and Burgess Keep Top Honors as SCJGA Players of the Year

The December issue of the Heritage Classic Foundation Rankings is the final issue of the year and the source of awarding the season’s end South Carolina Junior Golf Association Player of the Year. The Heritage Classic Foundation Rankings are based on overall finishes in tournaments across South Carolina and nationwide. Points are compiled from over 200 events conducted over the past twelve months. The South Carolina Golf Junior Golf Association and the Heritage Classic Foundation are proud to announce Trent Phillips as the Jay Haas Player of the Year and Gracyn Burgess as the Beth Daniel Player of the Year.

Champions Tour Player Jay Haas has an award in his honor that dates back to 1996 when Gamecock standout and current PGA TOUR member Kyle Thompson captured back-to-back awards. History is being made this year as Trent Phillips will be the first male player to win the award an impressive three times. Phillips never left the top spot since winning the prestigious honor last year. Capping off his final year as a junior player, Phillips captured victories at the SCJGA Players Championship, Beth Daniel Junior Azalea, the AJGA Haas Family Invitational, the SCGA Junior, and the Dustin Johnson World Junior. Phillips also represented Team USA at the inaugural Junior President’s Cup with fellow South Carolina junior player, Jacob Bridgeman. Phillips stayed in the national spotlight as he also qualified for the US Junior and advanced to the round of 16. Phillips will be honored by Jay Haas at the SCGA Golf Day on January 13 at Columbia Country Club.

LPGA Hall of Fame Member Beth Daniel has an award in her honor that recognizes the top female player for the SCJGA. Gracyn Burgess (Lexington) took the top honor in 2016 and never left the front runner position. Her dominant play all year put the award out of reach for the rest of the ladies field. Her victories include the George Holliday Junior, WSCGA Junior Girls, CGA Twin States, the CGA Vicki Desantis, the CGA Girls Championship, and six high school championships. Burgess will be honored by Beth Daniel at the Country Club of Charleston on December 22nd at 4:00 pm. All media, supporters of junior golf, and family members are welcome to attend.

#DriveTo25

We need your support as we #Driveto25. Just this year, the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation awarded over $11,000 to junior golfers and their families to compete in local, regional and national level events.

As a leading state in junior golf development programs, we want to continue to support our families and continue to grow the game. Until December 31st, the SCJGF has a mission to raise $25,000 for our Grant Bennett PAR Fund. The PAR (Player Assistance Reserve) Fund directly supports South Carolina junior golfers and their families.
