The calendar of the SCJGF grew a little larger in 2014 with a new event in October called Big Will’s Day Off. The “BWDO” was a smashing success thanks to the unwavering support from folks in the Rock Hill community honoring one of their own, Will Stephenson. “Big Will” as most knew him because of his towering appearance, was a fun loving gentleman who thoroughly enjoyed life and his ‘Days Off’ on the golf course. Unfortunately, Big Will tragically passed away before the age of 50 in early 2013 from complications of dementia that formed just after the loss of his wife, mother and father in the span of four years. Daughter and son, Taylor and Wil wanted to honor their beloved parents and family in some fashion, as well as celebrate the life that they lived along with the things they loved to do. Once Taylor, BWDO Chairwoman, sat down with the SCJGF to discuss possibilities we were able to help piece together the recipe for success.
With a healthy relationship with the folks at Rock Hill Country Club, the core of the Stephenson’s friends and the SCJGF staff were able to form a Golf Tournament and Auction to raise money for the SCJGF and Alzheimer’s Association. The word around Rock Hill and York County began to spread and sponsorships, teams, auction items and volunteers started rolling in. AME, Inc., generously became the presenting sponsor along with other lead donors such as Clinton Family Ford, York County Natural Gas Authority and Thomas & Leitner Orthodontics.
A beautiful day on the golf course in late October ensued. The day kicked off during registration when participants could ‘buy’ mulligans. Not your traditional mulligans though! If you bought a ticket, you were entered in a ‘BALL DROP’ on the driving range where presenting sponsor AME, Inc. set up a crane with a contraption full of numbered golf balls. Once all the numbers were in, the latch was released over a flagstick. The ball closest to the flagstick won the $1,000 grand prize! It should be noted that the winner was generous enough to donate the money back to Junior Golf and Alzheimer’s Research! THANK YOU!
After the ball drop, players scooted through the golf course. Upon the completion of golf, participants and guests started filling the ballroom of RHCC’s Clubhouse. Great food and cold beverages were on the scene as well as nearly 100 auction items. It was a special moment when Big Will’s brother took the microphone and thanks everyone for their support and participating in the inaugural event to support two causes near and dear to the Stephenson Family’s heart. When the dust settled, Big Will’s Day Off was able to take generate over $35,000 and contributions to both SC Junior Golf and the Alzheimer’s Association’s South Carolina Chapter were made.
A special thanks to the Stephenson Family for this opportunity, to the committee of the event who was the heart and soul and always kept the best interests of the family at the forefront, to the staff of RHCC and all of the participants, donors, sponsors, etc…that made this a can’t miss event moving forward!
